What are Communication Disorders?
Disorders of communication are related to difficulties producing speech and language, difficulties in hearing and understanding speech and language, as well as problems in the ability to swallow. Professionals who work with individuals who have a communication disorder are Audiologists and Speech-Language Therapists.
Audiologists are professionals dedicated to the assessment, identification, and treatment of disorders of hearing and balance. Audiologists work in speciality hearing clinics with other audiologists, in hospitals, and private practices, and in schools. The Master of Audiology Degree is the required qualification to become an Audiologist.
Speech-Language Therapists work with people who are unable to communicate effectively because of serious speech or language problems. Their work can be with young children who have failed to develop any language, adolescents whose lack of fluency (stuttering) makes speaking difficult or impossible, or older adults who have lost the power of speech through illness or accident. The Bachelor of Speech Language Pathology (Hons) is the required qualification to become a Speech-Language Therapist.
